New Member Information
Our season starts on the first Saturday in March and ends on the last Saturday in October with the aim to play a different course every Saturday. You can play as many or as few games as you want. The general remit is that any course we play is no more than an hour away from the pub. We have an annual League Trophy competition which is decided by using your twelve best results of the season, with you having to play a minimum of twelve games to qualify, played under Stableford rules. We also have a Singles and a Pairs Matchplay competition running throughout the year as well as a Medal Competition contested over a number of games and a Five Club Challenge Competition. The last Friday in June is traditionally our Captains Day where we have a day of golf etc. as chosen by the current Captain. There is also an annual trip to The Ashbury Golf Resort in Okehampton, Devon, that takes place in July. At every weekly fixture we have money prizes for first, second and third, along with nearest the pin and nearest the pin in three. The money being raised by every player that is eligible, contributing £6 above the cost of the green fee. £1 of the £6 is kept back to aid running the Society. Any prize money won is given as credit for when you next play, or can be held and then used when you wish. Due to the ever increasing cashless way of paying, payments can be made, in advance, online to the Society’s bank account, or card payments can be taken on the day by the Secretary. At the end of the season we have a Presentation Night where we award the trophies to the winning players. In order to join the Society we ask that you have a provable WHS Handicap Index that is used to calculate your Playing Handicap, or you join without one and earn your Handicap Index with us. A Handicap Index is calculated after three submitted scorecards, but with our Society you cannot enter or win anything until your sixth game, in order to achieve a more accurate Handicap Index. At this point a membership fee of £50 is payable if you wish to continue playing with us. This is not only used to pay for deposits for golf bookings etc. but also to ensure that any monies paid out on your behalf is not lost by the Society. If you commit to play and then do not attend, any money that was paid out on your behalf will be deducted from your £50 if appropriate. Every member will be texted on the Sunday before a fixture, as to whether they want to play, along with the venue, cost and first tee time. We ask that you do not ignore the text, especially if you are not playing, but reply accordingly. A confirmation text is usually sent out on the Friday evening confirming who is playing. If at any time you wish to leave the Society your current amount of membership fee is refundable. We have a certain amount of our funds invested in Premium Bonds, which if you have the full amount of membership fee invested at the time of a win, you are entitled to an equal share of any winnings. We hold an Annual General Meeting every February at The George Inn to decide the agenda for the coming season. Every fully paid up member can attend and have their say in the way the Society is run.
